About Social Media for Social Good

This site is the brainchild of myself, David Herron. For a long time I’ve had a vision/dream/idea that online community and social media and social networking websites could be used to inspire positive social change. This hasn’t just been a theory but instead I’ve been putting this into practice for well over a decade. I’ve developed several websites, participated in many online forums etc, exploring many ways to make a positive difference.
The intention is over time to have multiple voices on this site and to connect it with the matrix of social networking facilities on the Internet.
Some of the sites I have built or participate in are these:

• NING: I participate in several Ning sites including Electric A!D, Electric Wheels Network, PickensPlan, Planet Better Place, The Reef, Transition California, TRANSITION U.S. SOCIAL NETWORK, and Unpollute
• Seven Generational Ruminations and the TechnoSanity Podcast: A blog and podcast I publish about sustainability looking at long term effects and decision making about use and deployment of technology. (@7genblog on twitter, friend feed)

I come to this work with a deep background on the Internet and working on Internet technology. I first used the Internet in 1986 while a student at the Univ of Kentucky. I was lucky enough to be the network administrator for their Dept of Mathematical Sciences and was the person connecting wires and software to get the University connected to the Internet. I’ve worked for over 20 years in the Silicon Valley software industry.
